THE STORY

Welcome to Wakaliwood, the Wakaliga village outside of Uganda’s capital, Kampala, and the birthplace of the over-the-top, no-budget action movies produced by maverick Ugandan filmmaker Isaac Nabwana.

Dubbed the Tarantino of the slums, Isaac has produced 46 feature films in the last 10 years whose inspiration is equal parts 1980s American action movies and Shaw Brothers martial arts films, with a Ugandan twist.  The budgets of his films are in the range of $200, and yet Isaac’s homegrown slum “studio” today employs 100+ neighbors and friends from the village working on as many as five productions at once.

Fascinated

Fascinated by Isaac’s movie trailers on YouTube, film nerd Alan Hofmanis gave up his life in NYC and moved to Uganda to work and live alongside Isaac.  He not only became a Ugandan action movie star, but also Isaac's producer and promoter. His efforts have brought a wave of international media attention to Wakaliwood — VICE, BBC, Al Jazeera, the Wall Street Journal, and media outlets around the world have stopped by Wakaliwood to profile their efforts.

Our Doc

Our documentary chronicles 2 years in the life of Wakaliwood as Isaac and Alan deal with the pressure of high expectations spurred by a sudden wave of international attention. Isaac and Alan are now in production on the biggest Wakaliwood productions yet – the cannibal/zombie thriller EATEN ALIVE IN UGANDA and action knock-off THE UGANDAN EXPENDABLES. The stakes are high for both Isaac and Alan, who have put everything on the line.  And one way or another, things will never be the same in Wakaliwood once the dust settles.
